Description of SWNT Production Method

DESCRIPTION OF SWNT PRODUCTION METHOD

AND RELATIVE DATA

SWNT (single-walled nanoubes) produced by Arc-discharge method using Y-Ni catalyst.

Data about lenght, diameters distribution, photos and spectra are given on DATA page.

As-produced collaret contain about 40 wt.% close-end SWNT. It also contain fullerenes ~1 wt.%, amorphous carbon ~30%, nanoparticles with and without metal ~30%. Total metal (Ni-Y) ~25%.

After multi-stage purification by toluene extraction, acid treatment (HCl or HNO3) and thermal oxidation under air we receive enriched open-end SWNT-COOH, the purity is 70-80wt.% . The impurities contain amorphous carbon ~1%, metal ~3%, and coreless nanoparticles. Bulk density – 150 mg/cm3. (line 4 in Our Production table.) It is also possible preparation of material with lower bulk density – about 50 mg/cm3. (line 14 in Our Production table.)

If material is needed for peapods production or some other purposes where COOH groups are undesirable we done thermal annealing under vaccum. (line 2 and 3 in Our Production table.)

For functionalized SWNT (SWNT-NH2, SWNT-CONH-C18H37, SWNT-CONH-R-NH2 ) contain the same impurities as SWNT-COOH with purity 70-80% (see above). Also in collaboration with MedChemLabs Inc. We could use in-stock collection of different drug-like bulding blocks (about 300 now) and attach them to SWNT.

For different applications SWNT may be shortened to length 200-500 nm. (lines 8,9,11 in Our Production table.)

Preparation of solutions in different solvents according to customer specification is also possible.

Also we produce different substituted pyrrolidinofullerene derivatives (see picture) (lines 13 in Our Production table.)

DWNT also produced by Arc-discharge method. DWNT produced according to procedure developed by Hutchison et.al. in Carbon 2001, 39(5), 761.

As-Produced Double-Wall Carbon Nanotubes contained 20-30% DWNT. The remaining consist of

amorphous carbon ~40%,

nanoparticles with and without metal ~30%.

Total metal (Ni, Co, Fe and their sulphides) ~40%.

SWNT – 1-2%.

MWNT – no.

This tubes could be purified up to 90%, but due to great loses of material during purification procedure it will increase cost several times. (lines 15 and 16 in Our Production table.)

For functionalized SWNT (SWNT-NH2, SWNT-CONH-C18H37, SWNT-COO-R-OH ) contain the same impurities as

SWNT-COOH with purity 70-80% (see above). Also in collaboration with MedChemLabs Inc. We could use

in-stock collection of different drug-like building blocks (about 300 now) and attach them to SWNT. (lines 17 in Our Production table.)
